Reserve study software vs. a reserve study

Runway Reserves wrote this page, and we sell reserve studies. Last checked November 1, 2026. Confirm anything that matters with each company directly.

Homey Reserve and Solume are software, and we found no study service described by either, so we don't treat them as direct alternatives to a reserve study firm. Homey says it is not a replacement for a professional study. Solume's page is mixed: it says a professional completes the initial study, and also that its software removes the need for periodic studies. Many boards could use both: a study to set the numbers, and software to track them between updates.

"We found no" means it wasn't on the pages we read. It doesn't mean the company doesn't offer it.

We sell reserve studies, not software, so we have a stake in this answer. The table has no track record row because we found no study service described by either company.

When software is the better choice

  • You have a current study and want to act on it between updates.
  • You're a self-managed board that wants reserve tracking alongside dues and communications.
  • You want a free look at an existing report. Homey offers a free analysis with no signup.

When you need a study

  • You have no study, or yours is out of date. Homey says it is not a replacement for a professional study.
  • You've read that software removes the need for periodic studies. Solume's page says that, and it also says a professional is generally recommended and that industry standards recommend a study every 3 to 5 years. Check what your state and lender require.
  • You want someone to look at the property. Software can't record what's there today.
